The Upper Tar River Basin is a beautiful patchwork of farms, forests, streams and scenic rural landscapes. The land and how it has been used for generations is a significant part of our heritage and history. It also provides a quiet escape from nearby urban centers like the Triangle metro area. Residents enjoy a rural lifestyle here, while visitors enjoy touring local farms and historic sites, canoeing the Tar River, hunting, horseback riding, and other outdoor adventures.
Tar River Land Conservancy protects the natural and heritage resources that make this region a beautiful and healthy place to live, work, play and come home to. These goals are accomplished by working with landowners to secure voluntary permanent conservation easement agreements that protect these special places.
Since it was chartered in 2000, Tar River Land Conservancy has partnered with dozens of public and private landowners to protect over 12,000 acres of land and over 100 miles of stream and river frontage. Supported by hundreds of members, corporate sponsors and others, the organization works to protect drinking water and wildlife and provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and experiencing nature through the development of paddle trails. Tar River Land Conservancy also focuses on the protection of working farms, which support a healthy environment and are important to our local economies.
