Policy/Advocacy
The Conservation Trust for North Carolina and the North Carolina Land Trusts (a network of 23 local and regional land trusts) support effective public policies to expand funding and incentives for land and water conservation in North Carolina. The Conservation Trust and the NC Land Trust Council develop and advocate for a slate of policy priorities each year. The Conservation Trust and the North Carolina Land trustswork with other allied conservation groups to sponsor/conduct a Land and Water Conservation Lobby Day each spring. The Conservation Trust also monitors state agency initiatives and rulemakings that impact conservation and provides comments on behalf of the land trust community.
Public Policy Principles of North Carolina Land Trusts
Promote land and water protection in North Carolina: Natural areas sustain a healthy environment and economy for all North Carolina citizens.
Expand funding for land and water protection: North Carolina loses over 400 acres per day to unplanned development.
Work with broad, non-partisan coalitions to further land and water conservation: Land trusts are bridge builders working with a variety of stakeholders.
Support policies that foster incentives for voluntary land conservation: Decisions made by private landowners will determine the landscape of North Carolina for future generations.
Support conservation at all levels of government: More and better conservation is achieved when partnerships are formed at all levels of government with private individuals and groups.
