Huge New Conservation Opportunities for North Carolina Land Trusts
International Paper to Sell Forest Lands
North Carolina land trusts were recently presented with a huge opportunity to protect prime forest lands and streams in eastern North Carolina. International Paper (IP) announced last week that the company will soon begin selling as many as 639,000 acres of timber holdings, most of which are in the eastern half of the state.
Preserving these IP lands will be critical to protecting water quality in some of North Carolina’s most important river systems. Intact forests along waterways help prevent polluted runoff and sedimentation. These forests and river systems also feature globally rare and endangered plants and animals that make eastern North Carolina one of the most ecologically rich areas in the country.
The Conservation Trust will work alongside North Carolina’s local land trusts to take advantage of this pivotal moment in North Carolina’s land ownership history. Your financial help could not come at a more critical time as this window of opportunity may never open again. We need to do everything we can to ensure that these holdings remain healthy forests instead of being developed into subdivisions and strip malls. Please give generously to the Conservation Trust and the following local land trusts working in this region.
North Carolina Coastal Land Trust
Tar River Land Conservancy
Sandhills Area Land Trust
Triangle Land Conservancy
Please support our work to protect these intact forests.
