State Agrees to Purchase Saddle Mountain from CTNC
The NC Natural Heritage Trust Fund (NHTF) recently voted to fund the NC Wildlife Resource Commission’s purchase of Saddle Mountain from the Conservation Trust for North Carolina. The NHTF provides money to various state agencies for land purchases. The 251-acre property will be combined with an adjacent 212-acre property to create a State Natural Area open to the public for hiking, birding, fishing, and relaxing. The property is adjacent to 2,500 acres previously protected by The Nature Conservancy and the Piedmont Land Conservancy.
The Conservation Trust acquired Saddle Mountain in February, 2005 to preserve scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway, create new state lands for public enjoyment, and strengthen protection of wildlife habitat and the Mitchell River headwaters, one of North Carolina’s most important drinking water sources. The Conservation Trust used a generous donation from Fred and Alice Stanback to purchase part of the 251- acre property and NHTF is purchasing the rest. The Piedmont Land Conservancy in Greensboro was the initial driving force behind protection of this property and the 212-acre Wolfe Creek Preserve.
Saddle Mountain is located in Alleghany County north of US 21 and west of the Surry County line and is part of the backdrop Parkway visitors enjoy as they travel from milepost 218 to milepost 223.
