Tell the NC Legislature to Fund Conservation

The North Carolina General Assembly continues to deliberate over the state’s budget, including funding for North Carolina’s Natural Resource Trust Funds. The NC Senate approved full funding of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund at $100 million per year, but failed to fund the Farmland Preservation Trust Fund and approved cuts to the Natural Heritage Trust Fund.

The NC House of Representatives plans to pass its version of the budget during the week of June 6. Please call or write your state representative as soon as possible (The Honorable _______, NC General Assembly, Raleigh, NC 27601; 919-733-4111) to urge them to do the following:

  • Support full funding of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund at $100 million.
  • Support full funding of the Natural Heritage Trust Fund, including restoring cuts proposed to this fund.
  • Appropriate $4 million for preserving farms, either in the Farmland Preservation Trust Fund or the Tobacco Trust Fund.

You can make your case even more effectively by meeting with your state representative in person.

  • The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that North Carolina’s population will increase by 3.5 million, to 12 million in the next 25 years
  • Land and water conservation is critical to our air and water quality, the state’s travel & tourism industry, recreational and commercial fishing, the military, and the forest products and agriculture industries
  • 18 percent of North Carolina’s native plants and wildlife are threatened and endangered
  • More than 2,600 miles of our state’s rivers and streams are so polluted they do not meet water quality standards
