Conservation Trust receives grant from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to protect critical habitats along the
Blue Ridge Parkway

The Conservation Trust for North Carolina received a $100,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to protect critical fish and wildlife habitat around the Blue Ridge Parkway. The funds will be used to develop and implement a conservation plan for the region and increase outreach to landowners and their advisors. The Conservation Trust will use the grant to work with other land trusts toward a goal of protecting an additional 10,000 acres of ecologically significant land around the Parkway.

The conservation plan will help land trusts identify privately held lands that contain endangered and threatened species and migratory bird habitats. Increased funding for landowner outreach will enable the Conservation Trust and other land trusts to conduct numerous one-on-one landowner meetings and public seminars to educate landowners about the region’s conservation priorities. The seminars will explain how conservation agreements and other voluntary conservation measures can be effective land protection tools and benefit landowners.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is visited by more than 20 million people each year. Most of the magnificent mountain views people come to see along the Parkway are privately owned and highly vulnerable to development. North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains are at a pivotal point in history as over a hundred acres of mountain lands are developed each day. The Conservation Trust has protected 30,000 acres of wildlife habitat and scenic views along the Parkway, and other local land trusts have preserved more than 75,000 acres elsewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
