Meeting Kicks Off Falls Lake
Drinking Water Protection Initiative

Representatives from the Conservation Trust for North Carolina and four Triangle land trusts joined elected officials and conservationists from six counties on October 26 to launch the Falls Lake Initiative. The Falls Lake Initiative is a bold, multi-year plan to protect drinking water in Falls Lake and the entire Upper Neuse River Basin through accelerated land conservation along waterways . The Upper Neuse River Basin supports nine drinking water reservoirs for roughly 500,000 people.

The meeting brought together 70 people, including landowners, conservation organizations, and local and state officials. Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker and Granville County Manager Dudley Watts addressed the group. Initiative partners will work on a strategic regional conservation plan to protect all water supply sources in the Basin, which include: Falls Lake, Lake Michie, Little River Reservoir, Lake Holt, Lake Orange, New Hillsborough Lake, Corporation Lake, Lake Ben Johnston, and Lake Rogers. Initiative partners will reach out to landowners, local governments and the public with information about land conservation options and then work to acquire key parcels of land through voluntary purchase or donation of land or conservation agreements.

“This broad group of public and private partners will enable us to meet the challenge of safeguarding our water resources in a rapidly growing region while ensuring healthy economic growth for the future,” said Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker. “Land conservation in the watershed is more cost effective than cleaning up polluted drinking water and provides communities with the public benefits of recreation opportunities, cleaner air, and more wildlife habitat.”

Please support this Initiative and all land conservation being done to protect water quality in your region by considering a donation to the Conservation Trust and/or your local land trust. For more information about the Falls Lake Initiative, go to www.ctnc.org
