CLEAN WATER FUNDS AT RISK

The N.C. House of Representatives is in the final stages of completing the budget. News is that it includes cutting the Clean Water Management Trust Fund by $30 to $50 million dollars from the present funding level of $100 million.

The House is expected to make a final decision early next week so immediate action is needed to head off the cuts. Not only would the proposed cut set back efforts to protect water quality in the state, it would undermine Land for Tomorrow's efforts to increase funding for land and water conservation in North Carolina.

Please immediately contact your House member, and urge him/her to speak with Speaker Joe Hackney and House Appropriation Committee Co-Chairs Reps. Jim Crawford and Mickey Michaux, to urge them to restore the proposed cut. We need your local representatives to tell these three House leaders not to cut the Clean Water Management Trust Fund.

The trust fund has helped protect 4,277 miles of stream buffers and preserve 391,805 acres of land, but more funding is needed to protect the more than 3,000 miles of waterways that continue to violate state clean water standards.
