"Saving the Places You Love"
Student Photo Contest
The Conservation Trust for North Carolina, on behalf of 23 local land trusts, and North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives kicked off the “Saving the Places You Love” photo contest on February 14. The contest encourages middle and high school students to photograph their favorite natural scenes in North Carolina and offers cash prizes to North Carolina school kids and their teachers. Sponsoring teachers have a chance to win cash prizes toward classroom supplies, and student winners will receive prizes ranging from $250 - $500, donated by North Carolina's Touchstone Energy cooperatives. Students have until April 24, 2006, to submit photographs.
Middle school and high school winners will be chosen from each of North Carolina’s three regions by the following prestigious panel of judges:
- Philip Blumenthal – director, Blumenthal Foundation
- Linda Dougherty – curator of contemporary art, N.C. Museum of Art
- Tom Earnhardt – co-producer, writer and host of UNC-TV’s Exploring North Carolina
- Nan Graham – commentator, National Public Radio
- J. Scott Graham – professional nature photographer
- Lynn Minges – director of tourism, N.C. Department of Commerce
- Virgil Smith – president and publisher, Asheville Citizen-Times
- Virginia Weiler – professional nature photographer
- Richard Woodson – founder, Clear Light advertising and photography
Contest information forms were distributed to science and photography teachers throughout the state. You can learn more about the contest and download a registration form for yourself, or an aspiring young photographer you know, at CTNC’s website: www.ctnc.org.
