A Very Good Year!
Celebrating the Conservation
Successes of 2005
Those who love clean water, scenic landscapes, sustainable farms, and a diversity of plants and animals have reason to celebrate the work of the Conservation Trust for North Carolina in 2005. The Conservation Trust helped preserve over 8,071 acres of scenic views along the Blue Ridge Parkway, assisted local land trusts in protecting more of the places people love in their communities, and increased the strength and capacity of North Carolina land trusts to preserve more special places in the years to come.
Highlights include:
- We worked with the National Park Service, state agencies, private landowners and donors to protect stunning Blue Ridge Parkway views at Saddle Mountain, Phillips Gap, and Little Switzerland.
- We advanced drinking water protection by partnering with land trusts and state and local governments to protect Waynesville’s pristine watershed.
- With local land trusts and other conservation organizations, we launched the Falls Lake Initiative to preserve land in the basin that drains into Falls Lake, which will protect drinking water supplies at nine different reservoirs.
- Through our contract with the state’s Ecosystem Enhancement Program, we assisted the land trusts in preserving buffer lands along 102 miles of streams and 1,579 acres of wetlands since the program began two years ago. Another 38 miles of streams and 202 wetland acres are under option and 50 additional projects are in progress.
- We secured grants for broad regional programs that will preserve more family farms and critical wildlife habitat.
- We worked with land trusts and legislators on a successful campaign to fully fund the state’s Clean Water Management Trust Fund at $100 million per year.
- We helped launch Land For Tomorrow, a campaign to place on the November, 2006 statewide ballot a bond referendum to raise $1 billion additional funds for land conservation.
These accomplishments were possible because of you. Your financial support is an investment in North Carolina’s remaining natural lands. You are helping to preserve North Carolina’s unique quality of life.
We have ambitious plans to protect even more land and waterways in the coming year. Please help make 2006 an even better year for conservation by donating now.
