October 3, 2005 - Wayneville Celebration and Press Event

The Conservation Trust celebrated the protection of the town of Waynesville’s 8,030-acre watershed to preserve clean drinking water, wildlife habitat, and scenic Blue Ridge Parkway views at a luncheon at the Wayneville Country Club October 3, 2005. A press conference was held earlier that morning at the Waynesville reservoir. The Town of Wayneville, Mast General Store and Progress Energy generously hosted the event.

Elected officials and conservation leaders celebrate the
preservation of Waynesville’s 8,030 acre watershed.

(L to R)  Representative Phil Haire; Land of Sky Regional Council Region A Executive Director, Bill Gibson; Mayor of the Town of Waynesville, Henry Foy; Waynesville Town Manager, Lee Galloway; NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund Executive Director, Bill Holman, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy Executive Director Carl Silverstein; Conservation Trust Executive Director, Reid Wilson, Town Alderman Libba Feichter and Town Alderman Gavin Brown.

The event highlighted the signing of an historic conservation agreement between the town of Waynesville and the Conservation Trust for North Carolina, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, and the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund on September 22, 2005. The value of the agreement exceeds $18 million. The agreement protects the entire watershed that is the drinking water supply source for the town of Waynesville. The watershed is also part of an area nationally recognized for biodiversity and provides numerous scenic overlooks along approximately 10 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway between mileposts 430 and 440.

Speakers at the press conference and luncheon included Mayor Henry Foy, town of Waynesville; Bill Holman, North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund Executive Director; Reid Wilson, Conservation Trust for North Carolina Executive Director; Carl Silverstein, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy Executive Director; and Paul Carlson, Land Trust for the Little Tennessee Executive Director.
