The Conservation Trust honored Summit Society and Meadow Society donors at their 7th annual luncheon May 6 at the beautiful home of Betty Craven and Michael Warren near Chapel Hill.
Guests were treated to the readings of author, Michael Malone. Several of Michael’s novels, such as First Lady, Uncivil Seasons, and Time’s Witness are set in his native home of North Carolina. He has written numerous short stories, some of which appear in his prize winning collection, Red Clay, Blue Cadillac. Michael won an Emmy in 1984 for his writing for ABC soap opera, “One Life to Live.” He has been published in such magazines as Harper’s, Playboy, Mademoiselle, and Psychology Today and has contributed as a critic to The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, Newsday, The Washington Post Book World, The Atlanta Constitution and The Philadelphia Inquirer, among many others.
Joe Rowand, Founder and Chairman of the Meadow Society, was honored by the Conservation Trust Board and Staff for his work to start the Meadow Society and Summit Society. Joe hosted the first Summit and Meadow Society Luncheon in 1999 and thereafter until this year. The Conservation Trust had 7 Summit and 23 Meadow Society members when Joe founded it in 1999. As of 2006, the Conservation Trust had 19 Summit and 71 Meadow Society Members. Summit and Meadow members have contributed $9, 419, 243 to the organization for land and water protection across the state since its beginning. Those dollars have helped the Conservation Trust protect 11,685 acres in 56 places over the past seven years and assisted the statewide land trust community in protecting over 150,000 acres.
