Conservation Plan Released for Protecting Safe Drinking Water in Raleigh and Surrounding Six County Area
RALEIGH -– The Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative issued a comprehensive science-based conservation plan today that targets the highest priority lands to protect water quality in nine drinking water reservoirs, including Falls Lake. The Plan was released at a news conference at Wake County’s Blue Jay Point County Park.

CONSERVATION GROUP PRESERVES CLEAN MOUNTAIN STREAM NEAR BOONE
RALEIGH -– The Conservation Trust for North Carolina announced today that it has protected 22.7 acres along Boone Fork Creek near Boone in Watauga County. The Conservation Trust purchased the property to preserve the stream’s outstanding aquatic resources and a valuable section of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s natural corridor for wildlife. The property is located between Grandfather Mountain and Julian Price Lake near milepost 298 of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

UNLIKELY PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND LOCAL CONSERVATION GROUPS RESULTS IN MORE CLEAN WATER FOR NORTH CAROLINIANS
RALEIGH -– An unlikely partnership that emerged between the N.C. Department of Transportation, N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and North Carolina’s local land trusts across the state has saved many of North Carolina’s streams and wetlands and protected the state’s drinking water, according to a report released today.

LAND DONATED TO SAVE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY VIEWS
RALEIGH -– The Conservation Trust for North Carolina announced today it has donated two properties valued at over $852,000 and totaling 134 acres to the National Park Service for inclusion in the Blue Ridge Parkway’s boundaries. The donations preserve key pieces of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s scenic and natural corridor.

RALEIGH -– The Conservation Trust announced March 2 that it has purchased 12.14 acres adjoining the Blue Ridge Parkway near Little Switzerland in Mitchell County to protect the Blue Ridge Parkway's natural areas and scenic views. The Conservation Trust plans to donate the property to the National Park Service for inclusion in the Parkway's boundary.

NEW RALEIGH BUDGET PROVIDES $1 MILLION TO PROTECT FALLS LAKE WATER QUALITY
RALEIGH -– The Raleigh City Council assumed leadership in protecting drinking water for hundreds of thousands of citizens living in Raleigh and surrounding municipalities, by including in its approved 2005-2006 budget $500,000 for the Falls Lake Initiative to expand land protection in the Falls Lake watershed to preserve the lake’s water quality.

NORTH CAROLINA LAND TRUSTS RECEIVE $60,000 GRANT TO PROTECT MORE FARMS
RALEIGH -–The Tar River Land Conservancy, on behalf of North Carolina’s 23 local and regional land trusts, received $60,000 from the Tobacco Trust Fund Commission (TTFC) to protect North Carolina farms. The funds will be used to educate North Carolina tobacco farmers eligible to receive Tobacco Buyout payments about tax planning strategies, including those tied to voluntary land conservation.

North Carolina Land Trusts Receive Planning Grant from Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation
RALEIGH -
The Conservation Trust for North Carolina, on behalf of the statewide land trust community, recently received a $125,000 grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation of Winston-Salem. The grant will be used to develop and implement a statewide conservation strategy for North Carolina’s land trusts to increase land and water protection throughout the state.
