North Carolina’s land trusts presented an individual, corporation, local government, and state agency with their most prestigious conservation awards at the land trusts’ annual assembly April 28. North Carolina’s 23 local and regional land trusts use the awards to recognize those who have shown an outstanding commitment to protecting North Carolina’s land and water resources.

The Stanback Conservationist of the Year award went to Paul Braun of Burke County. Braun worked for eight years and ultimately succeeded in leading an effort to add 3200 acres to Lake James State Park to protect the lake’s water quality and provide greater recreational opportunities. |
The North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund received the Government Conservation Partner of the Year award. The state agency was applauded for its unparalleled work in protecting and improving water quality by purchasing properties and lasting conservation agreements on land along waterways. Land trusts presented Kavanagh Homes, a piedmont home developer, with the Corporate Conservation Partner of the Year award. Kavanagh has given each of its 800 new homeowners a one-time gift membership to Piedmont Land Conservancy since 2002. Press Release |
Burke County received the Local Government Conservationist of the Year award. Burke County provided bold visionary leadership in the effort to expand Lake James State Park through conservation land-use planning and zoning in support of balanced public-private conservation development along the lake and the Linville River below Linville Gorge. |
