Blue Ridge Parkway Project
The Conservation Trust announced on February 24, 2005 that it had acquired two properties that preserve scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway, create new state lands for public enjoyment, and strengthen protection of wildlife habitat and the headwaters of one of North Carolina’s most important drinking water sources.
Using its own funds and generous contributions from Fred and Alice Stanback of Salisbury, the Conservation Trust purchased 251 acres on Saddle Mountain and 201 acres along the Parkway overlooking Saddle Mountain, for a total of $1,754,000. The North Carolina Natural Heritage Trust Fund Board has approved purchase by the Wildlife Resources Commission of the 251-acre property, and plans to donate the 201-acre property to the National Park Service for inclusion in the Blue Ridge Parkway. The properties are located in Alleghany County north of US 21 and west of the Surry County line.
