Blue Ridge Parkway Project

Little Table Rock
Mitchell, McDowell, and Avery Counties - 544 acres

In June of 2004, a grant to purchase this property for protection was made possible through the state’s Ecosystem Enhancement Program (EEP) and a generous contribution for Fred and Alice Stanback of Salisbury. The property protects one mile of spectacular scenic views along the west side of the Blue Ridge Parkway between Mileposts 320 and 325, from Bear Den Overlook to the Orchard at Altapass. The preservation of Little Table Rock also protects the headwaters of two high quality streams, one of which contains a number of federal and state endangered species, and the continuation of a natural corridor important to hawk migration and other wildlife. In November of 2004, the Conservation Trust transferred the property to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, which will manage the long-term public use of the property.
